چکیده

Ontologies are gaining popularity in many domains as a way of representing, dealing and reasoning with large volumes of information, and they are starting to play a major role in computational science applications, e.g. in biomedical studies. The creation and maintenance of ontologies has become an engineering process that needs to be managed and measured. Therefore, as part of any ontology engineering processes, metrics can play a role helping in identifying possible problems or incorrect use of ontology elements. However, empirical studies that measure existing ontologies and set standard values are required for metrics to be effectively used. This paper reports a preliminary exploration of ontology metrics from a large set of ontologies extracted from the Open Biomedical Ontologies (OBO) repository. In this paper, we also present an ontology metrics tool, called Ontometrics, used to collect the set of metrics presented. Results show that such metrics can help identifying peculiarities of the ontologies that could be used as the basis for future ontology metric evaluation studies. © 2009 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Prioritize the ordering of URL queue in Focused crawler

The enormous growth of the World Wide Web in recent years has made it necessary to perform resource discovery efficiently. For a crawler it is not an simple task to download the domain specific web pages. This unfocused approach often shows undesired results. Therefore, several new ideas have been proposed, among them a key technique is focused crawling which is able to crawl particular topical...

Query Architecture Expansion in Web Using Fuzzy Multi Domain Ontology

Due to the increasing web, there are many challenges to establish a general framework for data mining and retrieving structured data from the Web. Creating an ontology is a step towards solving this problem. The ontology raises the main entity and the concept of any data in data mining. In this paper, we tried to propose a method for applying the "meaning" of the search system, But the problem ...

Benchmarking Ontologies: Bigger or Better?

A scientific ontology is a formal representation of knowledge within a domain, typically including central concepts, their properties, and relations. With the rise of computers and high-throughput data collection, ontologies have become essential to data mining and sharing across communities in the biomedical sciences. Powerful approaches exist for testing the internal consistency of an ontolog...

What's in a 'nym'? Synonyms in Biomedical Ontology Matching

To bring the Life Sciences domain closer to a Semantic Web realization it is fundamental to establish meaningful relations between biomedical ontologies. The successful application of ontology matching techniques is strongly tied to an effective exploration of the complex and diverse biomedical terminology contained in biomedical ontologies. In this paper, we present an overview of the lexical ...

Recommending Concepts to Experts: An Exploration of Recommender Techniques for Collaborative Ontology Engineering Platforms in the Biomedical Domain

Biomedical ontologies such as the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases and others are increasingly produced with the help of collaborative ontology engineering platforms that facilitate cooperation and coordination among a large number of users and contributors. While collaborative approaches to engineering biomedical ontologies can be expected to yield a number of adva...
